Build green (IS-SusCon project)

How can we reduce the impact of buildings on the environment? The aim of the IS-SusCon (Spread of Innovative Solution for SUStainable CONstruction) Erasmus+ international project, coordinated by the LCA Center Association is to give guidance on this. The main objective is to promote life-cycle thinking, not only among professionals but also among the general public who currently have limited information about the environmental impacts of buildings.

The selection and installation of building materials is usually based primarily on technical, economic and aesthetic criteria. At the same time, their impact on the environment and health should not be ignored.

Buildings are currently responsible for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, of which 28% are related to the operation phase and 11% to the extraction, production and installation of building materials. In a modern detached house, the emissions from building constructions are almost equal to the emissions from heating over 50 years. With the right choice of materials, the emissions associated with materials can be reduced. For example, by reducing the amount of concrete used in large volumes in the building industry today, emissions can also be reduced. Our case study showed that by switching to masonry blocks and ceramic slabs in a modern building with reinforced concrete walls and slabs, material-related emissions were reduced by 20%.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from buildings is one of the biggest challenges for the coming decades. To minimise the impact on climate change, the goal is to achieve carbon neutrality at global level by 2050. Our project contributes to achieving this goal in our country through the following steps:

The project has resulted in

- an understandable and easy-to-use educational material on sustainable building solutions (with clear, practical examples), which can be downloaded online.

- A web application for comparing building materials,

- and a quiz game (mobile app), which is also available for download in English, Finnish, Italian and Hungarian.
